If you had the pneumatic washer system fixed to the spare, that would also save having to refill the washer bottle more than once a year! The bag of sand could also come in handy if you got to a very slippery part - maybe choose grit! Nice to read of others' VW episodes - thanks for that one Jim. I've had my share too, but more of them were in the Beetle, as I was younger and more stupid/adventurous then. In fact, life with the Type 3 has been uneventful by comparison - one of the penalties of having kids I suppose. There was the time I filled it with enough flooring panels to cover two floors 20' x 11', and a couple of hundred pounds of lead for the roof - it needed the full rear tyre pressure for that, and was a bit 'wallowy' to drive, but it made it of course.
