I think there is still some confusion.  The Type 3 has a total of 4 heat exchangers.  Two large ones similar to those on a beetle that are connected to the front pair of cylinders (front is front).  These can be replace by j-tubes when using an aftermarket header style exhaust but do not need to be.  There are also two small heat exchangess between the rear pair of cylinders and the muffler.  These are NOT found on a  beetle.  They are about the size of a Kleenex box.  These are the heat exchangers that you give up by going to an aftermarket header style exhaust.

You also have to be sure to order a header for a Type 3.  The tube routing is completely different from a beetle's in order to clear the Type 3 fan housing.  You will also have to rig some flexible hose to connect the fan housing outlet to the large heater boxes since this is originally done through the small heat exchangers that you have just elminated. <G>
