So want seemed two gears was only one. This sounds strange to me, but I don't know enough to say whether it is possible, or how it might come about. I would think that you would get all the effects of 1st gear no matter of how you ended up there. Sounds like we should both study the manuals. Russ may understand this. > Question 1: I drove the car at 45mph (probably in 1st) for about 2 hours, > what have I done to it? Any damage you might have done would have been to the engine, just from revving it too high for too long. There's not much you can do about it now, but you may have beat up the # 2 main bearing saddle a bit. > Question 2: After checking the VM I left the hose off accidentally. Does this mean anything ie vm is bad (the vm does not leak) > or is the vm inconsequential when only running in 1st? The loping idle is the FI correct response to a vacuum leak and just indicates that several things are working properly. The VM isn't doing anything if the car won't shift. I believe there is a piston or pushrod behind the VM; if this part was missing it might cause your problem, but I'm not sure of that. If everything else looks good I'd suggest that you drop the pan of the AT and see how things look inside there. You should also remove the governor and make sure the drive tang is still there. If it has fallen into the final drive you may find it stuck to the drain plug magnet. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
