Okay, my mistake. I've had lots of them which looked bad, especially on the 
exposed outside face, but they all sealed okay in the end. I'm not familiar 
with the early style metal tube, however. Is it possible that rust on the 
tube's surface is keeping it from sealing

Okay, good man. I may have a good used one somewhere, but superglue actually 
does a pretty good job of repairing ripped rubber if the tears aren't too long.
