All the cars with a type 4 engine had an alternator with a non-integral regulator which was mechanical. It suffered from the same aging problems that our type 3 generator regulators had. For some reason, even the later Bosch solid state regulators also had this problem. I don't understand why; they should have been completely stable, and they certainly didn't have any points to burn out. I've replaced quite a few which failed to keep batteries up to par in our cold weather. I was surprised, too. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
