Keep in mind that the bumper brackets are just supported by thin sheet metal. There is really very little strength there. If your bumper takes a hit, the bracket will just shear out that section of sheet metal. I have seen a late squareback, with the factory rear engine mounts, which I suspect had been driven hard on rough roads, or perhaps even off road. The weight of the type 3 engine had pulled the rear mount support brackets free from the side panels, and then the weight had sheared the spot welds that hold the floor to the same side panel. That allowed the floor and support bracket to sag down against the main electrical cable bundle where it was slowly shearing its way thru those conductors. There's a tendency to look at anything made of metal and say, "It's metal, it will be plenty strong."
