That way it can be used either way, plus you don't get the sealer on your fingers. :=) And, there is a cutout in the case near the lower left mounting stud, in the area of the forward oil pressure relief valve.. This is to access the bolts that hold the torque converter to the drive plate. I have made this cut-out with die grinder and a burr tool. Just start removing material until you can get your fingers behind the drive plate. As for the compression ratio, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
