I don't know if it helps any, but if you get a chance you might want to look at the plenum and runners from a later watercooled Vanagon engine.  The WBX intake ports are *very* similar, and while I don't know if they'll clear the oil cooler (or fit under the lid), but they'll bolt to the heads.  The late Vanagons were 2109cc engines, so there might be enough flow potential there.
