>it was getting worse and worse as the car >heated up. is it possible that the car is >overheating? if so, how do i fix that? When I first got The B., (also '71 FI AT), I had this problem all the time, plus a lot of shaking. It turned out that the tank was full of water and had rusted, creating a lot of gunk which blew out my fuel pump (TWICE! at $200 each) and kept clogging my fuel filter. I had the tank replaced, and it happened again! So I had a third tank put in, (the one that's in there now) after having it sent out to be cleaned and coated. The reason for all the water in the tank turned out to be that the breather hose had a big hole in it. Every time I would drive up to Davis in the rain (this was that winter that we had those torrential rains) the water would be thrown into the filler hose by the splashing from the right front wheel. Another thing that had a huge hole was the charcoal canister that is located in the left front wheel well. It was totally rusted out. I don't know if water could get into the tank from there, but I had that replaced, too. So you might want to check your filter and hoses. Also, you might consider having your tank drained to see if there's water in it.
