Yeah, I think too much auto repair text just got written by people who just didn't have any real world experience. It makes sense if you think about it: Books get written by writers; cars get fixed by mechanics. I suspect that there's also some confusion with oil and clutch linings. Now I'm sure that they can also be cleaned out, but it's MUCH harder. If a brake job is starting to look really messy, I'll often just go grab the garden hose.
