I looked closer at the microfilm, and I see that the single port engines up to 
60,000 carried us thru 66, so those early engines probably all came with one 
piece cylinder covers like the ones on your 66. The SP cover plates shown for 
early single port engines must be for replacement use if the upper cyl covers 
also get replaced, although this is not at all clear from the microfilm.  

Since the US didn't import any single port engines after 66, you probably never 
saw any of the later ones. I know I never have, and if I did, I probably would 
never have noticed this detail. It makes sense that this separate plate would 
be introduced in 67, as that's when the DP heads came in and a different 
arrangement for the tin would have been required. At least this way the big tin 
could be the same for all the engines with only the small plates changing 
depending on the heads and manifolds.
