Well, I took my little Square out for another series of tests yesterday, and this time I actually wrote down (what a novel thought!) what I observed. Here's the results, in as distilled a format as I can think of. The engine seems to suffer from an oscillating power loss at high rpm's, resulting in a "lunging" effect. This lunging usually occurs when the throttle is fairly wide open and the engine has had time to attain higher rpm's. This effect is most noticeable at the 2nd/3rd shift point for the transmission and at high speeds (70's for the most part). The engine does not lunge in first gear or at the 1st/2nd shift point, possibly because the gears shift before the crucial rpm level is reached. I did not notice the lunging happening any more often on hills (up or down) than I did on the flats. The lunging was occasionally accompanied by a soft *pop* that sounds almost like an exceptionally puny exhaust detonation. Before I started testing, I parked on a flat spot, left the engine running in neutral, and checked the trans fluid level. It was about the dead center of the space between the two marks, and other than having a slight pinkish cast was perfectly clean. Is it supposed to have that tint? I would like to check and see if my points and timing are set right, but I don't have a Tach-Dwell meter, and with school just starting again I don't foresee having the funds to get one any time soon. Is there a listee near Clemson, SC who has one that I could use, and maybe could lend a hand in its use? I would be most appreciative. Well, that's about it. Other than me driving around and listening to it, are there any other tests I can run to help me pinpoint what's giving my darling so much trouble? Thanks in advance for the help! -Kurt '71 AT Square, "Tyria" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
