OK, who wants to buy an evil, nasty-assed old bitch with a really nice paint job? (And no, it's not ME). I swear, I'm ready to put The B. out of MY misery... I went down there, and pulled the points out and had a good look. There was quite a bump built up on both sides. I looked thru my bag-o-goodies that the miserable PO gave me, and found a new cap, pointer, points, condenser, and whatever the hell that horse shoe shaped thingy that slides into the side of the distributor is. All new, in boxes! So I pulled out the distributor (you guys were right, it wasn't too hard) and replaced all the above. The old horse shoe thingy was pretty gunky looking and worn. Had a little trouble getting it back in (How in the world do you guys with your big hand work on these things?) but I did. The points were much easier to set without the bumps on them. Set the dwell to 45. Proceeded to adjust timing, getting my customary shock in the process, and set the timing at TDC. Drove around the block. Looked at dwell, which was right on 45, but timing was off (white mark too far to the right) Reset timing, making sure to tighten well. RPM at 1000. Took her for a spin. No change what-so-ever! Going up the hill was almost impossible---barely made 32. I can usually do that hill at 40-45 from a stop. Hesitating at stop lights. After a full stop, when I press the accelerator, there is a split second where the engine seems to stop, then it comes on but with little power. The engine sounds "puttery" (like a bug). It usually sounds that way when it gets to 25 and I don't let it go faster, because it really wants to do 30. Now it sounds puttery all the time I have my foot on the gas. Car also shakes more than usual when stopped at a light. After my long trip (18 miles), I checked all the readings again, and they were right on. On the bright side, the gasometer now seems to be working. I'm beginning to think this car is a new form of Nazi torture...
