[T3] Engine "lunging"

Well, I went driving on nice, level back roads to see
what I could learn about my apparent problem. This is
what I can determine.

Whenever I get near the shift range for the 2nd/3rd
transition, my engine power will start to fade in and
out, but the rpm's still rise. Sometimes this fading
is accompanied by a small "popping" noise, but usually
not.

This fading -never- occurs during the 1st/2nd
transition, even if I run it at the same rpm; only
when going from 2nd into 3rd gear. It also doesn't
happen if I only accelerate at about 1/2 throttle or
less.

The last thing I can tell is that it only occurs when
I am running at least 3/4 throttle. If I ease off the
throttle a little bit when it starts lunging, the
transmission shifts and everything is groovy.

So- those are the symptoms I'm getting. Can anyone
help me, maybe tell me what to check next? I checked
fuel filters, their clear. I don't have a vacuum
advance on my distributor, so it's not a vac problem.
I'm stumped.

No, actually, they didn't.
I'm in Clemson, SC.
