	Wow, this is kind of funny...

	I don't believe that the holes (top or bottom) are open to 
the insides of the thermostat.  They're just there for mounting it.

	However, a cold, good thermostat should be self-compressed, 
expanding only when warm.

	So, I think we can restate your test as....

	1) Squeeze
	2) If it "squeezes", it's toast!

It's also a good idea to gently warm them to make sure that they 
expand; then you know you're set.  I once got a little to eager with 
a propane torch, though, and ruined a perfectly good one. :(
