I think part of the inital sluggishness is due to getting the torque converter to spool up to speed. You don't get that with the MT due to the heavy flywheel and being able to slip the clutch some. When I drive my Square, I use basically the same method that I did with my old bug, and that is to mat the gas and hold it there until I'm up to speed, and let the trans shift for itself.
