If your generator is not installed with the cooling hole lined up with the hole in the fan shroud, it will heat up and suffer a premature death (has happened to me). There is a little line stamped in the generator body; this line needs to be in line with the center of the generator hold-down strap. That way, the fan will blow air through the generator and cool it. To see if the flaps are opening, I put a little dab of white paint (Liquid Paper) on the connecting rod that runs in front of the fan housing. Then start the engine and let it warm up. After a few minutes, the thermostat expands, and the connecting rod rotates 90 degrees. You know the flaps fully opened if the connecting rod has turned the 90 degrees (i.e., the paint dab has rotated 90 degrees). -Mark Fuhriman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
