You do NOT need to remove or damage the seal to adjust the end play. It can be somewhat hard to get the shims out, however. There is no way to measure or the end play until you tighten down the flywheel, so if it had never been tightened, then it had never been adjusted. The gasket you should use depends on what vintage of engine you have. Late engines from about 67-on use an O-ring in the flywheel and neither a paper or metal gasket, but putting one of these in will make your end play too large rather than too small. It's also possible to have shims which have been slightly deformed so that they act like a kind of spring, taking up all the end play. The end play is actually still there, but the crank isn't loose, it's pushed in one direction by this "spring." I don't really think this should cause any problem (as long as you can still measure the proper amount of end play) but I still try to avoid using shims like this when I do a rebuild. In general, I find that if I rebuild an engine using the same crank and flywheel (but new bearings) the old shim pack is still correct. If I replace either the flywheel or the crank then the shims have to be worked out anew. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
