Are you feeding the relay coil power thru the E-switch? If so, is it possible 
that the zero Ohms is actually something rather small that turns out to be 
significant when you actually draw power thru it. It's even possible that it is 
passing thru the bulb in the handle, which would have a pretty low R when cold. 
(I'm assuming the early knobs had a bulb there, like the late ones.)

If it were grounding the relay power you'd be blowing fuses, or burning wires.

Just make sure you're using the right pair of terminals. If those are anything 
like the later swtiches there are enough terminals on them to get easily 
confused.
