Yeah, you left quite a mess. ;-) I'm not sure, but I think that sometimes you can get a chunk of carbon from somewhere in the engine that breaks loose. Once this happens you may find adjacent pieces that follow and a whole area cleans up pretty much at the same time. It wouldn't be too surprising to get this right after you sorted things out at last so that the engine could finally warm up to the proper temp for the first time in a long time. This thermal cycling would tend to loosen things that would have cleared out long ago if everything had been running right all along, but an engine that is running rich will develop carbon buildup in many places and will also never warm up properly. I'm thinking piston crowns, or under the valves, but it could even be from the interior of the muffler or heat exchangers.
