I just had this problem as well. The secret for me was to NOT pull the release cable too hard. Good point I pulled my cable right out from pulling too hard. I took the cable unit out, there's only two screws holding it in and the knob unscrews. It is easier with the glove box out. I carefully pried open the case and managed to use a bicycle brake cable $2.00 to repair it. It does not quite have the right end termination and I had to solder the loose end ate the knob end of the Bowden but it has worked for over two years now. I cleaned all the old lube out and replaced it with clean grease. Now carefully clean the cover and the mating surface with solvent and re-bond it with epoxy. Reinstall and Voila!
