It is most likely that this leak is from the MC. Look at the floor under the 
carpet under the gas pedal. Is it wet there? It is either leaking from the 
mouth of the MC or the long, front to rear, brake line that runs under the gas 
pedal has rusted thru. Either one of these would empty the rear half of the 
brake fluid reservoir.

You'll want to rinse out this brake fluid before it takes off all the paint. It 
rinses off easily with water.

Look for rust on the line under the gas pedal. Rust is generally worst exactly 
under the pedal where you can't see it.

The rebuild kit depends on which MC you have. If it has Ate molded in the side 
then parts are available. If it says FAG then you will need to buy a new MC. 
The kit could also be different if this is not the original MC, as the later 
ones used a different kit. The rubber seals are the same, however, so it is 
possible to use any 3/4"VW ATe kit to rebuild any ATe type 3 MC.
