You're actually talking about the return springs (upper or lower?), and not the retainer springs that hold the shoe against the backing plate, right? I would have thought the former would be the same. The center pins for the latter are longer for type 3s. Are the return springs identical except for the length? I assume you have a spare from your donor. It's unusual for a return spring to break, but I've seen the center pins pull out and let the rest of the parts fall to the bottom and get ground up.
