I've pretty much figured out that the problem with my car's poor compression in cyl3 is a bad/burnt valve or as Russ suggested, a piece of carbon caught up in a valve. Either way I'm gathering this means taking the engine out and pulling off the heads to check exactly what's going on. I already have a new set of heads ready to go if the valve is bad, so I could just swap the whole unit, and will probably do this anyway. I'm aiming to get another 10-20K miles out of the engine before a complete teardown/rebuild. At least that's the goal. Should I replace both heads if I end up replacing one? Also, do I need to take the engine completely out for this? My jack goes up a little over a foot (jack stands can go higher), but I don't think that's enough to get the motor out -- the Tom Wilson book says you need to get the back end of the car three feet in the air? Is there anything else I should know specifically before I attempt this? I'm a little intimidated by the thought of disconnecting the motor... Also, with the auto transmission, where do I put the jack to initially lift the car? Thanks! ===== -------------------------------------------- 1971 FI AT Squareback http://www.tiserves.com/VW/ vw_variant71@yahoo.com -------------------------------------------- __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
