At the gas station we fill up while John and Brooke adjust the e-brake so I
have brakes. There's also a police car at the end of the parking lot. I
start the car but when I tried to move the engine would die. We thought the
e-brake was too tight so it was loosened. Still same problem. There was a
tanker waiting for us to move so we were able to rev the engine, slip the
clutch, and move forward a little bit, then repeat the process, and get out of
the way.
Martin adjusted the e-brake more and after pushing it more off to the side
Brooke said that the engine wasn't getting enough fuel. So the fuel pump was
replaced, filter removed and a fitting was pulled from a spare carb to replace
the filter, thus allowing the fuel lines to connect. We clean the rotor and
cap and the points look brand new. Adam races the car around the weigh
station (we were at a truck stop/gas station), spilling gas out of the filler
neck with each turn. She's good!
Martin and I lead the way and make it out on to Interstate 5. S-L-O-W-L-Y we
hit 65mph and are cruising along, breathing in exhaust fumes. Everything
seems normal :-)
Then we start having fuel problems, again. Pumping the gas pedal is the only
way to keep the car moving and accelerating (working the accelerator pump).
My foot gets tired because I'm basically pumping the pedal once a second to
keep moving. Martin has us pull into a mall parking lot to figure out or
abandon the car. I don't recall what happened but I was tired of driving so
Brooke hopped in the driver's seat and we were off again.
After a little bit of driving and some hairy driving by Brooke (e-brake
drifting and smoking the front tires) the little "runner" is actually working
better. Whatever was restricting the fuel flow was gone :-) Ken noticed the
muffler and rear apron getting shinier so everyone figured there was an oil
leak somewhere.
As we continued out 3+ hour journey back to Portland we realized we wouldn't
get home before dark...
