I know that... I've taken apart and put back together _many_ VW and Porsche
axle assemblies of various styles before.  Well, except for maybe the early
911 U-joint'ed axles...

My point was this: what "standard" do you use to measure them?  If the CV is
in "rest" position (i.e. in the middle of travel, not binding anywhere),
then the axle itself is the longest part, and therefore the "assembled"
length is the same as the bare axle length.  Or, if you measure it as
installed on the car, then the length would change depending on rear
suspension position (i.e. on ground with engine in car, on ground with
engine removed, in air, etc.), rubber bushing quality, etc.
