Sounds pretty neat, but I've not seen this design before. Where did you find 
it? If a paperclip works, why not just use one and solder the wires together, 
so it won't get bent up in your pocket? It would be small and would fit easily 
on a key chain.

Yes, lubrication will help them. Just wiping grit off will help, but you can 
wax them, or use a very thin smear of grease. The Blaupunkt (now Bosch) 
antennas come with a recommendation to use an oil with MoS2 in it; a good 
example of this would be Dri-Slide, but Lock-Eze is similar, with graphite 
instead of MoS2.
