I'd check the gear oil level first and then drain it and check to see what comes out. Watch for metal particles. Clean all the gunk out of the magnets in the fill plugs. If it has been a long time since it has been changed, do it again in 6 months to see if appreciable metal has built up on the magnet in that time.
