[T3] 12 volt power supply

In cleaning out a spot for my new arrival (1969
Fastback)- I ran across an old step-down
(120vac:12vdc) transformer from one of my old HO scale
train sets...

I was thinking that this might be an interesting
'portable' (with a long extension cord) power supply
that I could use to isolate and test suspect
electrical components.  

Instead of removing the part and bringing it to the
workbench I could leave it in place and bring the 12v
power supply to its location.  

First, I need to determine which of the two power
supply leads is 'hot'.... 

thoughts / comments ?

good idea or a waste of time ??
