>At least when you're in this troubleshooting phase you really want to fix each >problem as it pops up. This includes getting the RIGHT distributor in there. >What year do you have, is it AT or MT, and what were the 2 distributors that >you tried? Well, my car is a '69 MT. The distributor we took out of there was an AC. The one that is in there now was borrowed from my friend's 70 AT, and it is an A-B (sounds like that might not be the right one for his car either). I think we screwed with this before, and we might have gotten them confused (with the one from my '73) because I have an M model sitting on my garage table. I think this is the one that came in the '69 when I bought it. I also think it is supposed to be in an Automatic? >One of the useful things about squares is that you can leave the engine cover >off and put a friend in the back seat with an inductive timing light. He can >just watch the light flash and tell you whether the light stops flashing when >the engine misses. He may also move the inductive clip around while you drive >and see if the problem is just one cylinder, or all of them. I'll have to try this as soon as I have a helper. It does seem like a good idea. >What position? Any fixed position? If so, then make sure your pressure sensor >hose is attached at both ends. Yes, any fixed position. Guess what... That hose was not only off at the engine side, but it's been off before. Upon closer inspection, it's really dried and cracked on that end (could this have been the problem the whole time?) so I'm going to get a new piece for that, new points and a new condenser before I go any farther. Would it be bad to go to a petronix type system while I'm trying to fix the car? >Check the standard tuneup things, including valves. Check the fuel pressure. >Check the charging system voltage at med rpms. More info: The smoke color was grey, and it is there at startup (when the hose was still off). It was gone when I reattached the hose, but then the hose is cracked, so I'm not considering it fixed until it is replaced. Any tips for getting the engine side on easily? It's really hard to get at with it being on the bottom. Jim: Contact me privately for info on the distributor rebuild. I need to have this done to the correct one, and it looks like I may have another one or two for you based on my friend and I trying to match up which one goes to the right year and all. Your help here would be appreciated. Thanks as always!
