I thought it was strange too, since it was working fine and then suddenly went high. I put it back in again after I had finished putting that new generator in and was sure the rest of the system was working, and the old regulator was still putting out a high voltage. I presume the bad generator damaged it in some way. One interesting thing about that regulator though, is it doesn't have the wire wound variode on the bottom, it has a two plate thing which I presume is made out of some special metal to do the same thing as the wire wound one does? I did check the wiring, and that is all ok. It was surprising really, but I think the variode on the bottom of the old regulator must have been taking most of the current, but luckily I spotted it before it burned out. > That style was used only in 67 and 68. So the generator must have been replaced at some stage then. I haven't tested the generator I bought with the posts yet, because the person I bought it off said it was bad and only good for parts. I will take it apart and see if there is anything obvious wrong with it. > Nice writeup, Ben. Thanks! The plus side of all of this is I think I understand how the charging system works a lot better now! ;-) Ben Doughney '75 1200L '63 1200 - Ringo '71 1600TL http://members.tripod.com/~superkafer/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
