Okay, I am currently looking at replacing the injection system on my '69 squareback with carbs, but at the advice of some members of this list, I'm going to take another whack at this problem with the list's assistance. Car: 69 Squareback, 69 and 70 mixed fuel injection system. Trouble: The car runs intermittently, and eventually dies. Let me provide a bit of background on this. The car always had a little "miss" when cruising at highway speeds. It would only miss for a moment (no backfire) then it would go right back to performing nicely. The problem got worse however. Then while at freeway speeds (between about 50 and 60) it would just cut out. The motor would still be running, but would not provide me with any power at all. Then it would just come back to life some. I would let up on the pedal a lot and sometimes the problem would go away then. The problem finally got to the point where it does this at all speeds. Now, here is the interesting thing. This absolutely does not happen until the car is warmed up. If I got start it right now, it will idle really high, but run fantastic. Once it is warmed up, I'll be lucky to get it to go more than a block or two. Things I've done: Well, I searched pretty hard during this process for shorts, or broken wires and have found none. I have replaced the Throttle Position Valve with another one and had the same trouble. I have replaced the points and condenser. I have started it and pulled the left bank injectors and let it run, then revved it up, and it gives me the same trouble then dies. I also did this with the right bank, and still have the same results, so it seems to be either affecting all of the injectors, or the ignition. I get spark at all of the wires and plugs. I have unplugged each one while running, and when it's running good, each plug makes a difference. When it's running bad, pulling almost any plug seems to kill it. More Info: When the car starts giving me this trouble, and I leave it in gear it will stay running. It might crawl at 3MPH, but it will not die. The moment the clutch goes in it will however. It seems to me that whatever the problem is, it is not a total loss of either spark or fuel, because it still have enough to keep itself going. Sometimes it won't start after all of this (maybe it is stuck in this "problem mode" and I can usually get it to start by turning the key on and off (not starting) several times, and then starting it. But it goes back into problem mode pretty quickly unless it is totally dead cold. Part Numbers: I've not looked for most of these before, and I know they are super-helpful when trying to work out a problem like mine, but the car is in a parking lot, half an hour from my house, and I really don't have a way to tow it. I'm hoping to get it running enough to get it home, or to solve the problem (which would be better). Sorry for the book... Any help you folks can provide might save an injection system. :) Bryan Castles Dallas Air Coolers '65 Panel Bus '69 Squareback www.aircoolers.org www.version3studios.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
