the engine vibration breaks these up and the airflow blows it out. Grime
made of oil and dirt is certainly a problem, however. I see a lot of oil
coolers which need to have their airflow passages cleaned out.

My '63 Notch engine was the dirtiest I have ever seen on a driving car.
Imagine driving on dirt roads for 10-15 years with leaky oil cooler seals
and a leaky oil pressure sender. At least 40% of the case was caked with
a combination of mud+oil but the cylinder fins and oil cooler still remained
relatively clean.

On the other hand, my '55 Kombi had a very minor oil cooler seal leak.
After a couple years of driving it in AZ, the fins had a thin layer of oily
dust. After the fix, my oil temps. dropped via my unscientific grab-the-dipstick
method. The oil cooler was clean.
