Yes, that could be the only problem. It could either be that some of the  nuts 
ont the head studs came loose, in which case you could just clean up the head 
and retorque them. 

OTOH, the stud could also be pulling out of the case. Test this by installing 
the head and torque the studs to 5 ft-lbs over the spec JUST AS A TEST. DO NOT 
ASSEMBLE AND PUT THE ENGINE INTO OPERATION IN THIS CONDITION. The reason is 
that the studs will get even tighten as the engine warms up and this would 
certainly strip the threads out of the case.

If you have studs that are stripped, the only fix is to completely strip down 
the engine and send it off to have threaded inserts (case savers) installed in 
it. This is a permanent fix.

Not sure. The valve guides are yellow brass and there is a layer of copper in 
the rod bearings. Grab the top ends of the valves and see if one of them has a 
lot of side to side slop (try side to side and up and down.) Compare all of 
them to see if one is bad. None of them should have perceptable play in any 
direction.
