Sounds like you have a pushbutton for the starter. If you are still using the 
original ignition switch for the car's DC power then ithat part may now be 
failing, too.

I don't know much about the early cars. Is there anything that could be fit in 
there? How about a modified beetly switch, or just the internal parts from 
one?
