I don't think the beetle pumps ever had the ring groove. I agree that it's 
surprising that they bothered, but I think its surprising that they even made 
different pumps at all. I'm sure the beetle carbs could have been set up to 
work just fine with the type 3 pressure.

OTOH, when you're talking about hundreds of thousands of pumps, I don't 
think making different ones is any problem.
