you will need to find out the specs for the float height from CB Perf or

you need to look at the plugs.  are then really black/dark brown?  if 
so, you need to turn the mixture screws way in!  i believe that 1 3/4 
turns out from seating (not hard seating) is the norm to start with.

you can overtighted to the point that you create a fuel leak under the 
clamp!  i just went through this with my carbs.

if the overflow tube is cracked, you will get this smell at ever fuel 
fill up!  and then, as the tank level goes down, so does the smell.

is the cap leaking fuel at this point?
