In this case, I was simply guilty of neglect. I hadn't touched ANYTHING on this car for YEARS! It also hadn't been driven all that much, but that doesn't excuse my ignoring it. BTW, I just mailed John an article from NASA Tech Briefs about carbon/carbon composite pistons and cylinders. They are experimenting with these because they can be made with very tight clearances because they expand and contract the same. The clearances are so tight that it appears that rings are not necessary, and emissions are reduced because the dead space outside the piston and above the rings is eliminated, because of the tight clearances again.
