<x-charset iso-8859-1>Rob, here's my second thought after having Jim weigh in on this. I agree with Jim that surface rust doesn't usually get under that sound mat. My original comments are from all my history with cars being in New Engalnd, car rust capitol of the world. I have to remember that some people live in areas where cars don't get rusty! ( In Cuba, they still drive 1930s vehicles.) So, if you are in an area that won't accelerate the surface rust you already have, and the car is from that area, you may well be safe in just cleaning up the surface rust you can see, stabilizing it, and putting in your carpets when ready. But if the car is from a rust area, be ready to pull up the sound deadening material and have a piece of the floor come up with it.
