<x-charset iso-8859-1>I have a wrench that fits the generator nut and with one hand turn the wrench and the other push/pull/tighten the belt at the same time. After I lost that wrench . . . I gripped the generator pulley with both hands and turned the engine. For fine tuning the rotation, I just push/pull on the belt. If the engine slips, I push down on the belt to tighten it up just a bit. Jeff '67 Sqbk -----Original Message----- RussW=> I think this was started by => "authorized mechanics" at the dealers. I have to say I don't think the 'correct' procedure is all that good, either, so I can understand why this came about. Relying on belt tension to turn the engine is iffy and you can't really get a decent-sized socket wrench in there anyway. Then there's that little bit of reinforcement next to the timing hole that seems to invite abuse. ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/ </x-charset>
