Mine didn't have that timing plug in there either when I got it. I didn't even realise that the hole was supposed to be round. Someone had been at mine with a screwdriver turning the engine over so it was bent into a oval shape. It looked like it had been pressed out at the factory that way. It was only when I had a look at some engine pictures online that I realised. It didn't take much to panelbeat it back into shape and I got a plug from the local hardware store.
