It sounds as though one cannot just take a type 3 into an alignment place and expect it to be done right. If that's the case can it be that the long standing shimmy in the front end can be from regular alignment shops not aligning it accurately?
Their books will have all the right data, but they won't know NOT to turn the
lower ball joints away from front and center. They will want to set the toe-in
and then move the steering wheel to make it look centered, which is the
wrong way to deal with the worm and roller steering box.
They will not know about adjusting the end play on the upper torsion bar (sway bar) before doing the alignment.
It's possible that mistakes like this could induce a shimmy on left turns.
When my dad owned my fasty the front end had a shimmy on left turns for
awhile and one of the VW shops it was taken to put on a stabilizer bar to
the steering column ($100) and that didn't correct it. Is it that without
the manual specs it won't be done right?
That's an awful lot of money for a steering damper, but I don't know what
else they might have been talking about. The steering damper Pittman arm
bushing often needs to be replaced just to make the damper effective and
lots of places will overlook this.
