<x-flowed>replacing just the ring or just the pinion is a huge NO-NO. if you want 
it to last you *must* replace them both and make sure you have matched 
pieces.

you could only ever order ring and pinion (including the whole shaft 
the pinion gear is on) as a unit from the factory, which ensured 
correct match.
