This happened to me about a year or 2 ago. You can get it back together without tearing everything down, but it *is* a pain. That longer stud you pulled out does hold the oil pick-up tube. If I remember right, this longer stud goes through the case at about 11 o'clock (your head facing forward and your nose under the sump plate) and holds the oil pick-up tube in place. The oil tube pick-up is held down by a nut which goes onto the stud. I forget what size, but the nut may be 10mm. Feel around inside there and you'll see what I mean. The pick-up tube will be loose. And look for the nut that came off. I used one of those flexible wire things with a magnet on the end of it. I think there's a washer, too. Using a small and very thin wrench of the right size (again, I forget which size.. 10mm?), I was able to just barely get a wrench on that nut inside the sump and get the stud back in where it needs to be by turning a second wrench over the acorn nut on the outer end of the stud. My small, thin wrench came from a little set I found at Sears. I cleaned the sump out pretty well using paper towels first and used loctite on the inside part of that stud so the nut holding the pick-up tube would not come loose again so easily. So far, so good (although I no longer routinely remove the sump plate for regular oil changes anymore. I think I'll do it maybe every third or fourth oil change from now on. For the stripped case threads, you need a Helicoil. I have forgotten the size, so somebody will need to chime in here. If the threads on the stud are also gone, you can get a new stud from any auto part store. -Mark Fuhriman '69 Fastback ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
