Lori - A cautionary tale involving Maaco, but the principle still applies to Earl's place as well. I did all the prep on mine, taped everything, put the license plate in a holder tucked in the rear hatch. Everything ready for them to do the shoot. Results is that they didn't remove the plate and holder from the hatch, leaving a masked place where the holder was. They left the hood open and overspray went onto my gas tank filler. When they removed the masking they did so with considerable gusto and tore some of the rubber molding as well. Overspray on tires as well. Moral of the story is to do the prep your self if at all possible. Get a clear understanding of exactly what they will do, and what you will do, so there is as little room for error as reasonable. Remove absolutely as much as possible before they shoot. If it ain't there, they can't paint it! For the price you get a spray job over whatever you provide to them. If they do any prep, it will be to a minimum of quality standards. I had mine painted prior to a move to the great norhtwet (Seattle). It is now 24 years later and the paint had survived, fairly well in places that I didn't crunch. As to your specific question, I regretted over and over having it painted a slightly different color that original. In those days, there was no such thing as "cheap color match". It bugged me all of the time to see where the original and 'close' were adjacent to each other. I would opt for doing the prep yourself and getting the right color. The warranty is only as good as the prep AND the chemical prep immediately prior to painting. Get assurances that they WILL do the same prep as with their paint. The cleaning just prior to painting it is crucial to how well the paint _holds_ to the car. Doing minor dent filling is not hard, just tedious. Serious metal moving and dent pulling does take expertise and the right tools. Find or make a friend in the biz! Jeff '67 Sqbk with Maaco job, and a truck that dad had painted every few years by the Earl and is also holding up well -----Original Message----- Lori asked us - Took The B. over to Scheib to get an estimate today. Guy says he can do their best paint job, 6 year warranty, and fix most of the dents for $541. The down side is I have to use his paint, which is close but not an exact match to Marina Blau. It looks like "Baltic Blue", which is lighter and less greenish. Now, should I go with that, or should I have him match the Marina Blau exactly? That would cost the same, but doesn't include the dent repair or the warranty. ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
