As long as the ball is smooth they will wear slowly, but once the ball rusts, this will wear thru the nylon very quickly. The only replacements I have seen in recent years are eastern european cheapies, which lack the spring that gives these a long life. Once these wear a tiny bit they are loose. I strongly recommend that everyone keep the ones you have going as long as you can.
