There is a spring under it that often pushes it up. The usual reason that it can pop up is that it hasn't been pushed down far enough to snap into place. You really have to beat them down to get the fingers to grab under the inside lip. If the fingers have been squeezed inward for years you may need to spring them out a bit to get them to hold again. You can do this if you stick something in there that forces them outward while you immerse the cap in boiling water for a few minutes. Find out where it is really coming from. If it's the fan housing you will have to get in there and fix it. There is one large bolt in the black "handle" that can still hold the housing steady even if the small bolts have come loose and are ruining your fan. > I'm wondering if there's a relationship between the rattling motor and the > oil breather cap popping off?
