I would assume the latter, as it's not mentioned in the parts book or the owners manual, while official factory accessories, like some radios, which definitely did have VW part nos, are. In any case, there was a tach specially made by VDO for the Type 34. It had a "dent" cut out of the back so that the windscreen wiper mechanism wouldn't hit it.
