It would be strange if they retained the single ports since all other aircooled engines were dual ports from 1971 on (yes, even the 1300 Beetles). Actually, I dont know if the 1200 Beetle went to dual ports after 71, so the 1500 may actually have been a single port as well.
Strange, yes, but true. I think because of the design of the single-carb manifold, the single port heads remained. I don't think there would be any advantage to make it dual port in that setup.
