Any other ideas where I should start looking for the trouble? Have you checked the clutch cable? If a few strands have broken and the cable is starting to fray, it can act like this. If the return spring on the throwout arm back on the side of the transmission housing is broken, which is very common, then it is impossible to tell whether the clutch free play is adjusted correctly or not. You're correct.
